Department of commerce is one of the pioneer departments in Thanthai Periyar Government Arts & Science College with UG to PhD. Programme with 800 students and 22 fully qualified and well experienced teaching faculty members. B.Com. Degree course was introduced during the year1969-70 under the affiliation of University of Madras. M Com Degree course was introduced during the year 1971-72. B Com Tamil medium has been offered since 1979.   Ph. D Programme in Commerce commenced from 1987-88 and year 1993-94   M Phil programme was introduced. Majority of the faculty members are recognised as research supervisor and actively guiding to Ph.D programmes. The department has successfully produced more than 100 Doctorates. B Com Shift Course was started during the year 2007-08.

Department have Usha Agarwal Endowment fund to give cash award to four meritorious students in every year from the interest earned from the deposit.  Four major research projects were undertaken by our faculty members such as Economic Empowerment of Tribal Women Through SHG in Kollihills, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu sponsored by UGC, Economic Violation Against Dalit Entrepreneurs In Tamil Nadu sponsored by ICSSR, Entrepreneurship Development Programme In Tamil Nadu sponsored by UGC, Entrepreneurial Competence and Activities Engaged by Prisoners in Tamil  Nadu- An Evaluation Study sponsored by ICSSR-IMPRESS and presently one project ongoing on Multi Nodal Impact of Pradhan Mantri Farmers Welfare Schemes on Agricultural Productivity and Socio-Economic Standards of Farmers in Rural Areas of Tamil Nadu sponsored by ICSSR .

And also, the department organised a National Seminar on “Financial Inclusion for Inclusive Growth” sponsored by UGC in 2013, Inclusive Banking through Technology sponsored by ICSSR in 2014 , Social Entrepreneurship – A Drive for Sustainable Development sponsored by UGC in 2015 , National Seminar on Fostering Scientific Temper on Business Research on  22^nd February 2019 Sponsored by ICSSR , International Seminar on India Sri Lanka Trade Relations on 22^nd February 2020 Sponsored by ICWA and Workshop on Emerging Trends in Accounting Education and Research Sponsored by Indian Accounting Association , Tiruchirappalli Branch. Department signed MoU with various academic and research institutions to share and explore knowledge and experience in the field of commerce and accounting.
