PG and Research Department of Economics

History of the department of Economics is traced back to 1965.With its majestic gait; it is celebrating its Golden Jubilee year in 2015-16. It carries the legacy for being a department established with inception of Periyar EVR College in 1965. Throughout its past since its inception, it has been striving hard with all sincerity and flexibility in academic sphere to uphold the objectives and social cause for which it was established. Department of Economics had offered only B.A., Economics during 1965-1994. It was actually affiliated to Madras University Since 1965. With the bifurcation of Madras University in 1982 -83 it begun to function in the operational area of Bharathidasan University and hence the affiliation of the course was granted by the BharathidasanUniversity in 1982-83. The status of the department has been elevated as a post-graduate one with sanction of affiliation to offer M.A. Applied Economics course in 1994-95. With the autonomous status accorded by the UGC, the nomenclature of PG course was changed as M.A. Economics as requested by the students to enhance their employability opening new vistas in employment platform.

It has added a feather to its crown when it begun to offer Ph.D., research course in 2005. As a step ahead in its development, the Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Bharathidasan University have recently granted their ratification to offer M.Phil.Course in Economics. With sustained effort, in true sense, the department of Economics has been enriching the students with an all-round development by continuously enriching itself. Alumni of this department arestanding and visible examples for its achievements. After 50 years of travel, it finds its alumnus with prestigious position in Govt. and private sector. A quite reasonable number of alumni adore the political and social platform.

A well-qualified, talented, sphere heading and inspiring teachers are the source of knowledge capital. They are nine in number but one as a team. With huge potential and motivation to cater the academic needs of students, teachers imbibe and instil knowledge with values and scientific temperament into students. Teachers are Mostly with Ph.D. degree and NET/SET qualification. Everyone possesses a reasonable number of publications to one’s credit. Department of Economics has as distinct library of its own with over 2000 books, 12 National and International Journals and their back volumes.

A separate laboratory with computers, inbuilt audio-visual projector and such other electrical and electronic teaching aids makes the delivery of students’ educational needs not only simple and easy but also more effective. Department library opens up new windows to the learners to attain the new horizon in the globalized scenario. Department of Economics has been moving ahead with its legacy so as to bring laurels and justice to its objectives and ultimately to find itself in new heights forever.
